Palestinian singer, Zain Daqqa, 15, will headline the Concert For Palestine at Alexander Sinton High School on Sunday 30 June, at 3pm.
Palestinian singer, Zain Daqqa, 15, will headline the Concert For Palestine at Alexander Sinton High School on Sunday 30 June, at 3pm.
Zain is the son of Al-Jazeera Gaza cameraman, Samer Abu Daqqa, who was killed by a targeted Israeli drone attack in Khan Younis in December last year.
Zain will be accompanied by his brother Yazan and Manal Tamimi.
Ms Tamimi is an internationally renowned activist who works with the Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission and is from Nabi Saleh village. Ms Tamimi will speak at the gathering.
Among the South African artists in the line-up are poets Khadija Heeger, Chris Ferndale, Tauriq Jenkins, Megan Choritz, Jasmine Toffar, Stembiso Sibanda and Iman Omar.
There will be dance performances by the 021_Rebels, Likhwezi Arts Project and Flamenco dancer Che' Adams. Music will be provided by the Insurrections Ensemble, flamenco guitarists Bienie and Dawood Camroodien, the diverse Rosa Choir and Afrosun Traditional Artists who will do drumming during the event. The programme will also feature Palestinian oud player Adel Mseis and excerpts from the production Shakespeare to Gaza.
The Cape Town event is part of a Youth Month tour hosted by Shamsaan, (meaning two suns in Arabic) an initiative that promotes social activism through the arts.
The Concert for Palestine is organised by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and the Cape Cultural Collective, in partnership with Shamsaan, the Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA), the South African Jews for a Free Palestine (SAJFP), the Salt River Heritage Society, the South African Palestinian Arts and Culture Coalition (SAPACC), Health Workers for Palestine (HW4P) and a South African journalist collective that highlights the plight of Palestinian journalists.
Donations are welcome and refreshments will be on sale.
