Uber robbers behind bars

The three young men caught on dashboard camera footage as they robbed an Uber driver in Belgravia on Christmas eve have been arrested.

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU) nabbed the suspects in Mitchell’s Plain on Friday January 3.

The driver had narrowly avoiding being stabbed as he tried to co-operate with the robbers who attacked him from the driver’s side, passenger and back seat.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith released a statement saying the suspects had been identified as belonging to the IGB gang in Hanover Park, but had not been seen in the area since the video had gone viral.

“Information gathered indicated the suspects were hiding out in Mitchell’s Plain and were traced to a park in the area. While still relaxing with refreshments, all of the suspects were surrounded and taken into custody,” Mr Smith said.

The driver’s stolen cellphone was also recovered, after investigators gathered information about who it had been sold to.

“Proceeding to the premises, the stolen phone was retrieved and booked in as evidence,” Mr Smith said.
