A 19-year-old man was shot and killed in a gang-related shooting in Allison Court, Heideveld, on Wednesday March 19.

Manenberg SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, said residents heard several gunshots and when they stepped out to investigate they found his lifeless body.

“The 19-year-old apparently belonged to a local gang in Heideveld but in recent times crossed over to another opposing gang, which allegedly led to his demise,” Captain Bennett said.

A case of murder has been opened for investigation and no arrests have been made.

The police station is continuing its high-density patrols because of the ongoing gang violence in the Manenberg policing precinct. This has resulted in several arrests, including the arrest of a 33-year-old man on Saturday March 22, for the possession of 23 units of unga and tik.

On Thursday March 20, a 23-year-old man was arrested, during a stop and search operation in Stormsriver Way, Manenberg, for possession of 29 mandrax tablets, 18 units of tik, and four units of heroin. An amount of R800 in cash was also confiscated.

More drug arrests were made on Tuesday March 18, which included a 22-year-old who was arrested for the possession of eight units of tik. On the same day, four other men, aged 21, 25, 30, and 34 years, were arrested for drug-related crimes in separate incidents.

An 18-year-old man was also arrested for public violence on Tuesday March 18, as he was caught by police officers throwing stones and inciting violence, during an attack on other youths in Manenberg Avenue.

Said Captain Bennett: “The precinct has been influenced by various gang groupings that have destroyed human rights and the dignity of a vulnerable community. As much as people call upon their rights to better service delivery, their mindset is influenced by everyday situations of violence that have become a norm. Substance abuse is still a huge concern as well, as this has a direct impact on gender-based violence and the breakdown in families.”

Brigadier Jayce Naidoo called on the community to actively combat crime by reporting any illegal criminal activity.
