Three more guns are off the street, thanks to crime prevention operations from Manenberg SAPS.
From Monday April 14 to Saturday April 19, police also arrested three men aged from 26 to 33 years, for the illegal firearms and ammunition that were confiscated.
Manenberg SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, said they targeted gang hotspots with intelligence-driven operations.
On Monday April 14, members of the Public Order Policing arrested a 26-year-old in Jenny Scheinder Street, Tambo Village, for the possession of a 9mm pistol and five rounds of ammunition. Police were doing patrols and followed up on information they received from the community, which led to the arrest.
On Wednesday April 16, another 26-year-old man was arrested.
Captain Bennett said that the Manenberg SAPS crime prevention unit were patrolling the hot spot in Gonubie Road, when they spotted a man who was acting suspiciously. As they stopped to search, the man fled and police cornered him in a wendy house, where he had thrown the gun under the bed.
"The firearm was retrieved with no ammunition," Captain Bennett said.
On Saturday April 19 a 33-year-old man was arrested in Don Street, Manenberg and police confiscated a 9mm pistol with seven rounds of ammunition.
“These focus-driven operations proved successful as they brought calm to the precinct, and the community celebrated Easter in a safer environment. These combating crime prevention initiatives are ongoing, as we try to break the back of violent gang behaviour,” Captain Bennett said.
He also warned residents about street parties.
“Street parties will not be allowed. This is where gangs recruit new members. It has also come to light that the youth are introduced to substances like tik, and the abuse of alcohol is rife among the youth. This has also led to several young girls being sexually assaulted by gangs as part of initiation. This practice should stop immediately. It will not be tolerated.
"Street parties will be deemed illegal within the Manenberg policing precinct’s gang-infested areas.”
