Manenberg police have declared a zero tolerance policy on illegal street parties, particularly those organised by gangs.

According to Manenberg SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, this is because these events have consistently led to violence, drug abuse, and the recruitment of youth into established gangs within the Manenberg policing precinct.

“Illegal street parties are a breeding ground for death and destruction. Our youth are being violated and introduced to substance abuse, while the adult community watches. This behaviour will no longer be tolerated. Our station commander, Brigadier Jayce Naidoo, confronted the gang bosses regarding their continuous lawless behaviour, bringing them to order, who planned ‘end of month bash’ street parties. During the engagement, a strict and stern warning was issued against proceeding with these lawless events,” Captain Bennett said.

He emphasised that these gatherings are illegal and directly contribute to heightened gang conflict and a breakdown of community safety, and has also called on the community for assistance.

“The responsibility for addressing this issue extends beyond law enforcement. While SAPS is tasked with protecting our community, the community itself must actively participate in preventing these activities that destroy the future of our young people. We often see communities attack SAPS members during the execution of their duties, which indicates either an ignorance of the law or a complete disregard for it.”

Captain Bennett added that residents were informed about the legal process of applying to host events like these from the City of Cape Town. Going about it legally also means that there will be the necessary enforcement to police such events, he said.

Additional police resources have been placed on standby to shut down any illegal street parties. SAPS Manenberg calls upon the community to report all unlawful gang activities, and specifically any planned or illicit ongoing street parties.

Active community participation is crucial to shutting down this blatant gang activity, Brigadier Naidoo affirmed.

This is the only way communities like Manenberg can restore their integrity and ensure the safety and well-being of their residents, he added.

Manenberg SAPS urges anyone with information on illegal street parties or gang activities to contact Manenberg SAPS at 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
