On Mandela Day, Friday, July 18, the Spin A Yarn knitting group visited Lansdowne Library to distribute beanies, scarves, soup, and blankets to people in need.
The initiative is part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day campaign. Cape Town ambassador Ruth Ely said the group uses every opportunity to contribute.
“This is a 67 Blankets for Mandela Day initiative. We make every day a Mandela Day,” she said.
Ms Ely said the Spin A Yarn group meets at Lansdowne Library every second Wednesday.
“We have consistently created blankets and scarves for those in need,” she said.
She added that the group has been active for six years and continued its work throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
The annual winter drive has grown exponentially since its inception, she said.
Over the past decade, 67 Blankets has become renowned for its contributions, handing out scarves accompanied by a touching note.
“I'm not lost if you are cold and need me to take you home.” This sentiment embodies the movement’s ethos, connecting individuals through acts of kindness and compassion, she said.
Ms Ely also extended an invitation to the community, urging those with the resources and skills to assist the initiative to visit Lansdowne Library.
“We distribute these items all over Cape Town, reaching those who lack essential resources and live under unconducive conditions,” she said.
Stephanie Fransman, an ambassador at the library, expressed her satisfaction with the efforts of the 25 women who make this mission possible.
"I am grateful to have such a wonderful team of women who are always willing to help,” she said, adding that the 67 Blankets initiative is making a big change in people’s lives.
"We distributed a lot last Wednesday.”
