Like all other entertainment venues, Club Galaxy had to close in March 2020 because of the Covid-19 lockdown.
Athlone nightclub Club Galaxy will reopen on Saturday December 3, after a nearly three-year hiatus, with a promise to take patrons on a nostalgic journey.
Like all other entertainment venues, the club had to close in March 2020, because of the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
The reopening of “Cape Town’s most famous club” comes with a host of bands and DJs who have performed there over the years, since its opening in 1978.
Vernon Castle, Sammy Weber, Celeste Williams, Stigue Nel, Allou April, Bjorn Petersen, Just Us, August West, and Richard Ceaser are among those on the line-up. The DJs, Keith, Dr Jules, MD, Peter and Nico, will be spinning the discs from 5pm until late, with Terrence Wannenberg as the host.
The owner of the 44-year-old club, Kantie Patel, said the club would be open on specific nights only.
“We were not really sure which way to go, because although most believe Covid has disappeared, in the back of my mind, I know China is under lockdown again because the numbers are rising. On top of this, we also have to deal with power outages. However, I got so much pressure to open the club again. We have generators, so the club won’t be affected by outages, at least. The club will be open on specific nights only, where we’ll have nostalgic parties, classic Thursday nights, event parties and tributes to our old DJs,” Mr Patel said.
He added that Club Galaxy is his family’s trademark business and they are “quite humbled” that it is as popular as it is.
DJ Keith Davids started at the club in 1985. “There were many highlights for me over the years, but our Thursday nights were something else - with live bands. On Saturday afternoons, baseball and soccer teams would rush from the sport grounds to Club Galaxy to enjoy sundowners. I got to know a lot of people over the years, and the formula that worked for the club - which made it so popular - is the vibe. All of it comes down to the vibe - that is why people came back all the time,” he said.
Doors open at 5pm and tickets, at R100 each, are available from Webtickets. Galaxy’s sister club, Westend, opens at 8pm on the same day. For more information, call 021 637 9027 or 081 849 6986 or email: admin@thepatelgroup.co.za
