The Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) is hoping to bring “unity in diversity” with its annual Youth Festival at the Nantes Park tomorrow (Thursday June 16).
Now in its eighth year, the festival will screen short films and feature live performances by local artists.
BTC chairperson Vernon Piedt, said: “Due to the non-existence of township cinemas and theatres, our free family-orientated Athlone Nantes Park Youth Festival, fills the gap of the true movie and theatre-going experience – in the form of an outdoor theatre, cinema and drive-in, wrapped in one. Our entertainment and film programme reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of our region’s audiences, with special emphasis on the youth. It brings communities together to have fun and encourage dialogue.”
Entry to the event is free, but those who would like to attend, are asked to donate non-perishable food or clothing, which will be distributed to underprivileged families.
Among the short films that will be screened, includes Before Sunset, a 26-minute horror film, which was filmed in and around Athlone.
Apart from the live entertainment and film screenings, there will also be stalls selling a variety of items and food.
The festival runs from 1pm until 7pm.
