Avid reader and prolific writer, 12-year-old Amr Salie, has now turned his attention to urban legend creatures.
His second book, soon to be published, is titled the Mothmen Files.
The 10-chapter thriller is much longer than his previous book Blameless, also a thriller, which was published in November last year and launched from Lansdowne library (“Young author, 11, publishes first book”, Athlone News, November 1, 2017).
Amr said that the book is based on the legend of the Mothman creature and tells the story of a girl who loses her family then encounters strange happenings.
Amr, who is one of four sons from Sandvlei Farm in Macassar, addressed the crowd at the Suider Strand library last Monday, April 23, in commemoration of World Book Day which was celebrated by the City of Cape Town’s library and information services department in collaboration with the National Library of South Africa.
“I was very excited and I enjoyed it. I want to thank everyone for their support so far,” he said about the event.
His mother Maryam Salie, said that it was phenomenal to be part of the programme.
She said as a family they are planning to visit schools across the Western Cape to share Amr’s book, tell children about the importance of reading and to spend time with children who have special needs.
The family has also started the Amr Salie Endowment Fund for Amr’s educational needs, which is managed by the Student Support and Strategy Foundation.
Amr reads about 30 books a month and will soon be writing a third book.
“I am also studying to become a software engineer. It is challenging but I like it. I have also been developing computer and Xbox games as well,” he said.
