The City of Cape Town has opened 16 community swimming pools which are expected to operate until Sunday January 15.
The City said this was possible because it had managed to secure enough of the required chemicals to keep the pools clean during that period.
The pools will open from Mondays until Sundays between 10am until 5pm.
However, the City warned, swimming pools facility management may be forced to abandon planned opening times, due to the stage of load-shedding affecting their respective area.
These pools are in Bellville, Bellville South, Bonteheuwel, Brown’s Farm, Delft, Goodwood, Hanover Park, Kensington, Khayelitsha, Lentegeur, Muizenberg, Parow North, Ruyterwacht, Trafalgar, Wesfleur (Atlantis) and Wynberg.
Eight swimming pools are temporarily closed due to either structural, mechanical or electrical faults. Work continues at Athlone, Langa, Manenberg, Mnandi, Westridge, Parow Valley, Ravensmead and Newlands. Once repairs are completed, opening dates and times will be communicated.
Swimming pools in Eastridge, Elsies River, Emthonjeni, Morningstar, Observatory and Vulindlela will not open for the 2022/ 23 season due to major repairs needed.
At Newlands swimming pool, two concerns were identified on the water circulation and necessary chemical to kill bacteria. This led to unforeseen delays in opening as scheduled.
“To date, testing of the chlorination system and water circulation is currently in process to ensure compliant pH levels.
“The chlorination system and entire plant room are planned for future repairs and upgrades, notwithstanding the heritage significance of the plant room structure,” the statement read.
The second priority relates to constrained water circulation between the scum channel and the sump. The connection is being re-established and tested, in order to avoid any blockages.
