Philippi SAPS arrested a 28-year-old man in Hanover Park for the illegal possession of this firearm, ammunition and extended magazine.
Three illegal firearms and ammunition have been removed from the streets, thanks to tip-offs from the Bonteheuwel and Hanover Park communities.
On Saturday January 7, Bishop Lavis SAPS Crime Intelligence officers and Metro Police responded to a tip-off and arrested a 22-year-old man in Bonteheuwel for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to Ward 50 councillor, Angus Mckenzie, the man, from Bracken Street, is believed to be a member of a notorious gang.
“This is a huge win for the B-Block of Bonteheuwel and the tip off will go a huge way in bringing peace and calm to that area,” he said.
On Thursday January 5, Bishop Lavis SAPS also arrested a 28-year-old man in Juniper Street, Bonteheuwel, for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. This too, came as a result of a tip-off.
In Hanover Park, a 28-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition at a residence in Ontario Court on Thursday January 5.
Philippi SAPS spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, said after a spate of sporadic shootings in Hanover Park, police have intensified integrated crime prevention operations in hot spot areas.
“Swift response to information received on Thursday January 5 at about 8.10am, led members of Metro Police to a residence at Ontario Court, Hanover Park. Upon searching the residence a 9mm pistol, an extended magazine and ammunition were confiscated. The serial number of the pistol was filed off,” Captain Goliath said.
Philippi SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Adriaan Saulse, commended the community and members involved in the arrest and reiterated that police will continue to clamp down on criminals and their criminal activities.
