Ahmed du Plessis, 58, died in a fire at his home in Gatesville last week.
A 58-year-old dental technician has died in a fire in Gatesville.
City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse said the cause of the fire at the Shaanti Cresent home on Wednesday June 14 was unknown.
“One adult male died of fatal burn wounds. Two adult females were treated by Metro EMS and transported to hospital. The fire was extinguished at 8.45am,” he said.
Community leader Fowzia Veerasamy identified the dead man as Ahmed du Plessis, a dental technician. She said his wife was still in hospital.
“They were only three people in the house - the father, mother, and one daughter. There were three dogs on the property as well who were running up and down the road. The SPCA collected the dogs until the residents are able to sort out things at home. It is very tough on them as they are still trying to pick up the pieces,” she said.
Gatesville ward councillor Aslam Cassiem said the family had contacted him a few days after the fire saying that there was still smoke coming from the electricity box and the electrical appliances.
“The community is feeling very distraught because he was well known. Several neighbours called about the smoke that was still coming from the property a few days later, but no one knows what actually happened,” he said.
Mr Du Plessis’ janaazah was held on Friday June 16, in Milner Road, Rondebosch, and he was buried at the Pooke Road cemetery.
The family declined to comment.
