Bonteheuwel cyclist Calib de Kock, 17, died while training in Beach Road, Sea Point, last Tuesday.
Condolences continue to pour in for 17-year Bonteheuwel cyclist Calib de Kock, who died while training in Sea Point.
The Phoenix Cycling Club member came off his bicycle when he crashed into a car along Beach Road, on Tuesday June 11. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries, according to Sea Point police spokeswoman Captain Anelisiwe Manyana who said police had opened an inquest for investigation.
The teen was very family- and community-orientated and loved the challenges that came with cycling, said ward councillor Angus McKenzie.
“While sadness overwhelms us, Calib’s legacy gives us hope, hope that more young people will choose the path he had and be relentless in their pursuit to achieve success. My deepest condolences go to his family, his mom, our community, and the cycling fraternity,” he said.
In a statement, the Western Province Cycling Association said: “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing of under-19 rider Calib de Kock, of Phoenix Cycling Club. He was out training this morning when someone opened their car door, and he collided with it. He passed away of his injuries. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and fellow club members.”
In a statement, Bonteheuwel High School described Calib as an exceptional pupil and a bright light in the school community, known for his kindness, talent, and strong spirit.
“Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that you join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers as we come together to honour and remember Calib's life. Rest in peace, Calib. You will forever be missed but never forgotten.”
