Star College Bridgetown, in collaboration with Turquoise Harmony Institute (THi), distributed 285 pairs of school shoes and more than 1 000 pairs of socks to 10 institutions across the greater Athlone area.
This initiative is called School Shoe and Sock Drive, aimed at ensuring that pupils have the essentials to attend school with dignity.
“This drive is even more significant as it was carried out in tandem with our bi-weekly sandwich drive, providing not only vital school supplies but also nutritious meals to learners in need. By addressing both the immediate needs of students' physical comfort and their well-being, Star College Bridgetown and Turquoise Harmony Institute hope to make a lasting impact on the educational experiences of children in the Cape Flats community,” said Kulsum Parker from THi.
She added that this initiative aims to bridge the gap in areas where access to basic school necessities often remains a challenge.
"Star College Bridgetown and THi, understanding this need, continue to step forward with tangible support that addresses both immediate and long-term educational barriers. At Star College Bridgetown, we believe that with the little we can do, we can make a broad, bigger, and better difference. Our collaboration with Turquoise Harmony Institute and our generous supporters have shown just how much we can achieve when we come together as a community," said principal Zafer Zor.
Dr Aydin Inal from THi said: "Every donation, every act of kindness, helps improve the lives of these children and brings us closer to bridging the educational gap in our communities.”
He added that the drive's success would not have been possible without the generous contributions from parents, sponsors, staff, and the THi community.
“Their support continues to fuel initiatives that make a profound difference in the lives of children who need basic resources,” Dr Inal said.
The school shoes and socks were donated to Woodlands, Heideveld, Willows, Alicedale, Parkfields, Bokmakierie, Thornton Road, Kewtown and Starling primary schools, as well as the Leaky Shack Foundation.
Anthony Meyer, the principal of Woodlands Primary School in Heideveld, commended the efforts of Star College and the Turquoise Harmony Institute.
"We are always honoured to attend anything Star College and Turquoise give because we know they have our learners' best interests at heart. We are truly fortunate to be blessed with these gifts for our learners, which make a tangible difference in their daily lives."
