Soprano Khayakazi Madlala from Monte Vista has joined Cape Town Opera as a Judith Neilson Young Artist.
The training and bursary programme is dedicated to nurturing talented postgraduate singers, pianists, and conductors for the demands of a professional career.
Madlala made her debut as the High Priestess in Aida at the Royal Opera House in London earlier this year, and will be reprising the role at Cape Town Opera’s own production of Verdi’s Aida that opens at the Artscape theatre on Friday May 23.
Aida features a 52-strong chorus and will be directed by Magdalene Minnaar with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kamal Khan and choreography by Gregory Maqoma.
Ms Madlala received her training at the Gauteng Opera Academy and the NWU Conservatory.
Operatic roles she has sung include Mimì in La bohème at both the Johannesburg Theatre and the Durban Playhouse, as well as performances in opera scenes with Gauteng Opera, and The Sacrifice by the late Dada Masilo in Brazil.
Her accolades include the Audience Prize and the Andrea Catzel Prize at the 2020 Voices of South Africa Competition.
Aida runs at the Artscape Opera House from Friday May 23 to Saturday May 31 with five performances.
Book through Webtickets or Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695.
