Dr Randall Ortel, a family medicine specialist who has his roots in Manenberg, visited his community to inspire other young people from the area who are interested in studying in the medical field.

He met with a small group of Grade 12 pupils from Manenberg High School, to guide them and share an inspirational talk. He even helped them apply online for their chosen tertiary applications while there with them, and surprised them by also paying for their application fees.

Dr Ortel also encouraged them to put in the hard work to achieve their dreams and told them the sacrifices he had to make, including how he had to drive a taxi on weekends to help fund his studies.

“If your dreams don't scare you, then you are not dreaming,” he told the pupils.

Pupil, Orin Lottering, said he would like to be a paramedic, while Saadiqa Baker said she would like to pursue a career in nursing.

“I have a condition that affects my kidneys, and I have been in and out of the hospital many times. This is why I want to pursue nursing. Now I have gained more insight into how to make that dream a reality. I now know how to do university applications and have learnt so much more,” Saadiqa said.

Asiphe Sifo said she feels more motivated to go for her dreams.

“There is a lot you can do, even with limited resources,” she said.
