The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is encouraging aspiring photographers and nature enthusiasts to capture a winning shots of nature for an opportunity to gain exclusive access to their favourite protected area.
This is part of a special campaign by SANBI to celebrate global Nature Photography Day, marked on Sunday, June 15.
This day is celebrated annually to encourage nature lovers and photographers to capture and celebrate the natural world.
SANBI operates the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town.
“Whether your photo features a Southern Ground Hornbill, an aloe, small insect or a shady garden trail, every entry is welcome and celebrated,” said Nontsikelelo Mpulo, SANBI spokesperson.
Ms Mpulo said she believed that Nature Photography Day was more than just beautiful pictures; it was also about reconnecting and appreciating the plants, animals, and ecosystems.
To enter, simply visit any SANBI botanical or zoological garden before Friday June 20.
“While you are there, take a photo that captures the essence of the space, whether it is a blooming flower, a towering tree, a playful primate, or a peaceful moment by a pond,” said Ms Mpulo.
She added that participants need to share the picture on Instagram, Facebook, or X using the hashtags #NaturePhotographyDay2025, #SANBI4Nature #SANBINatureSnaps and tag SANBI along with the garden that the participant had visited.
One winner will receive a SANBI Gardens membership for two people and will be allowed free entry to their favourite garden for the entire year.
