Pupils and educators at Heideveld Primary School marked Youth Day on Monday, June 16, by dressing up as superheroes to raise awareness about safety and well-being.

The initiative, spearheaded by Principal Rushdi Desai, aimed not only to celebrate the day, but also to inspire confidence within the local community.

The day began with a parade where pupils and teachers showcased their colourful superhero costumes, accompanied by law enforcement officers. Together, they walked through the streets of Heideveld, a neighborhood often grappling with safety concerns.

Mr Desai said that pupils felt like super heroes walking around in a place they don't usually feel safe in. He said that the superhero costumes served as a symbol of hope and safety, encouraging children to envision themselves as strong and capable individuals. He said that children needed good role models in their lives.

"They felt so safe and like they had so much power. Children can't walk in the streets, they are robbed, being targeted to sell drugs, and the gang violence is high. For that space of time they lived in an imaginary world taking back their space. They enjoyed the walk about and walked in spaces they can't anymore. This all fits into creating a positive mindset in and outside of the school environment," he said.
