More than 500 elderly and vulnerable residents in Athlone were provided with meals, blankets, and support at the annual seniors' Muharram programme, hosted by Jamatul Khaleel Gadat Jamaah, at the Athlone Civic Centre on Saturday July 12.

The event, held in partnership with various non-governmental organisations, aimed to honour and care for elders in the community. Attendees included Minister of Social Development Ganief Hendricks, volunteers, and local residents who came together to assist those in need.

Adnaan Samodien, spokesperson for the organisation, said the initiative continues to deliver on its founding purpose of serving the poor and vulnerable. “The initiative provided essential items and support to those most vulnerable during the cold winter months and beyond.

"On Saturday, we had more than 500 people, but we managed to live up to the expectation through the assistance of other organisations that contributed significantly. Those attending had a three-course meal and were given food parcels to take home,” he said.

Mr Samodien thanked all community members and volunteers for their continued support. He also acknowledged the contributions of partner organisations including Hakuna Matata, led by Irafan Abrahams, and the Strandfontein Islamic Assembly, led by Ebrahim De Roos.

“We believe in showing up consistently, again and again, for those people who often get overlooked or feel like they’ve been forgotten. We started the organisation to feed the needy and poor. This organisation is about kindness, care, and reminding people they matter. We all know that there's no dignity in being cold and hungry,” he said.

Those who benefited from the event expressed their appreciation. Soraya Walters said, “May each one involved in the organisation be blessed,” while Fatima De Vries and Rokea Khan described the organisers as pillars of the community.

The Jamaatul Khaleel Ladies Thikr Jamaa extended their thanks to all individuals, groups and organisations that contributed to the success of the event. “It was a privilege to welcome seniors in our midst. Their presence brought warmth and barakah to the gathering,” they said. “Every contribution helped us uphold the dignity of our elders and show them how deeply they are valued.”

Volunteers, including many young people, were also acknowledged for their dedication and service. The organisation said it hoped they would be rewarded for their energy, patience, and compassion.
