The South African Minifootball team struggled to find their rhythm in their opening match against the Ivory Coast at the 2025 African Mini Football Nations Cup taking place in Derna, Lybia. However, Team SA bounced back from a 10-1 defeat against The Elephants to beat Uganda 7-5 in the second group stage fixture. South Africa, currently in third spot in Group C, will face Tanzania in the final group stage match later today.
Newly-elected SA Minifootball president, Sherwood Park's Fadiel Gasant has become the first president from outside Cape Town to lead the team.
"We're proud to be the first team from Cape Town to participate in this tournament," he said.
Minifootball is a 6-a-side tournament, with 25 minutes each way. The 9 players selected departed from Cape Town International Airport on Sunday, July 13 heading to the eastern parts of Libya, in the port city of Derna, where the tournament will be hosted at the Derna International Stadium.
"We're headed to Derna for the opening ceremony, and I'd like to express my gratitude to the Almighty for this opportunity, to all parents for trusting me with this responsibility, and to the players for their enthusiasm," said Gasant, as they made their way to the international stadium.
Host nation Libya beat Chad 3-0 and Senegal beat Congo DR 1-0 in the opening fixtures on Day One, Monday July 14.
Last year's edition of the African Minifootball Cup was the third edition of the tournamentheld by the African Minifootball Confederation (AMC) and was held in South Africa.
