In a ceremony held on Thursday, August 28, Manenberg police celebrated the achievements within their ranks during the annual Service Excellence Awards.

The event, hosted at the Manenberg police precinct, served as a tribute to four dedicated officers who were awarded commendation certificates for their performance in leading cases that resulted in significant prison sentences for perpetrators.

The awards recognised a group of officers from various ranks, acknowledging their commitment, loyalty, and passion for serving the community.

“Well done, my good and faithful servant,”  said Warrant Officer Ntando Mzantsi, a detective and respected pastor, as he encouraged fellow officers.

In his address, he spoke to officers about the moral foundation on which many members of the police build their commitment to community service.

Police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennet said that those who strive to go beyond the call of duty will ultimately be rewarded.

“Manenberg police houses the most dynamic and diverse group of staff members. Each member plays a pivotal role in combating crime in the precinct,” said Captain Bennet, highlighting the importance of their work.

He described detectives as the voice of victims unable to speak and praised officers who stand tall against adversity. “Today’s awards are the culmination of hard work, and hard work pays off,” he said.

Brigadier Jayce Naidoo said he admired the officers and was proud to be associated with such a dedicated group.

The event also recognised individuals across various categories: Constable Zakkie Julius claimed the title of top Junior visible policing member, while Captain Jannie Vermeulen and his crime prevention team were named the best senior members.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Van Noie was acknowledged as the top junior detective, and  Detective Sergeant Craig Keating earned the honour of top senior detective; Captain Elliot Botha received the Detective of the Year award.

Further awards were also presented in the administrative departments.

The senior category for Vispol Employee of the Year went to Lieutenant Colonel Shireen Jones, recognised for her efficient management and service delivery. In the supply chain management category, Lieutenant Colonel Masixole Sihu was awarded the Administration Employee of the Year for ensuring operational efficiency at the station.

The Manenberg police station has become a “towering light and beacon of hope” for the community it serves, said Captain Bennett.

He said that the staff and management will continually strive to deliver effective policing, even in the face of limited resources.
