There are still no arrests in connection with the alleged murder of Hanover Park senior, Mary Serfontein.

Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

“The suspect or suspects who fled the scene are yet to be arrested. Detectives are pursuing all available leads in a bid to ensure a breakthrough,” he said.

Ms Serfontein was found lifeless in her home on Wednesday, July 23, following a suspected overnight burglary. Her son, Michael Douman, discovered her after noticing signs of a break-in and missing valuables, including bicycles, cash, and personal items ("Tragic murder of Hanover Park pensioner prompts police investigation" Athlone News July 23).

Mr Douman said detectives have been in contact with him about footage of the incident. “The detective brought an expert to explain the footage. He came with the pictures, but it was indistinct and we could hardly see. He told me it would take a long time before the next report and fingerprints. It seemed as if he had already given up hope—it appeared that way to me,” said Mr Douman.

“This is such a serious case. I don’t know what to do anymore. At times, I don’t hear anything,” he said.
