Manenberg police sector managers, together with City of Cape Town law enforcement officers, took a step to address social challenges in the community by engaging local youth through sport on Thursday, September 11.
In an approach to combat gang violence, they organized a soccer match on a local astro turf, where young people from Manenberg faced off against a team from Heideveld, said Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennet.
"The event was more than just a game; it served as a life lesson, showing participants that losing can still bring pride, teamwork, and personal growth, lessons that far outweigh the lure of gang membership," he said.
"The atmosphere was filled with excitement and courage, as youth embraced the values of fair play and resilience, understanding that injuries are part of the game, but anger and aggression have no place," he said, adding that the match allowed participants to experience the simple joys of sport, leaving smiles on faces across both teams.
This initiative is part of a wider strategy by Manenberg sector managers, using sport as a tool to address social ills and create a safer, more positive environment for young people.
The hands-on approach demonstrates "the power of action over words, proving that community collaboration can truly change the narrative for Manenberg’s youth," said Captain Bennet.
