The Children of Light (Colt) Educare raised just under R40 000 at a fund-raising brunch that will help the pre-school serve daily meals for their pupils and provide extra outings and stimulation for their children.

Around 120 people attended the fundraiser held at the end of last month at Windsor High School in support of the Rondebosch East non-profit pre-school that provides free education to children living in poor communities in Athlone.

Colt fundraising and marketing officer, Wendy Witten, said the fundraiser included an auction, where all money raised would go towards providing children with three wholesome meals daily. “Funds raised will also be used for enriching education programmes led by our dedicated teachers, and outings for the children that will broaden their horizons and spark joy,” she said.

The fundraiser also included meals from an Indian cuisine restaurant, while the guest speakers were Glenda Jones, the founder of Afrika Ablaze Dance Company, and dance instructor Jason Stoffberg of Afrika Ablaze. The dance company  entertained the audience with a contemporary piece by Danielle Jones, Quisha Dawood, and Lauren Jacobs to the lyrics of one of Glenda Jones' poems called “Oxygen.”

“Overall, the fundraiser brought the community together and highlighted the impact the school has on the community and, most importantly, on the children, from past to present pupils,” said Ms Witten.
