The audience enjoyed the group’s performance to the song 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)' by Shakira so much that they called for an encore.

The Cape Cultural Collective’s Children’s Arts Group held its first mini-concert and mid-year awards ceremony on Saturday, September 6, at Bridgeville Primary School in Athlone.

Families and community members attended to celebrate the pupils’ achievements.

Launched in May, the programme brings together around 30 pupils from Athlone, Gugulethu, and Manenberg, giving them a platform to develop skills in song, dance, and drama. In keeping with the CCC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, performances were delivered in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa, reflecting the richness of local cultures.

A team of facilitators, teachers, parents, and volunteers supports the pupils each week, overseeing transport, safety, and providing nutritious snacks to ensure children can focus fully on their creative development.

Project Manager Nurene Jassiem said the event highlighted the pupils’ dedication and growth.

“It was heartwarming to see children from different communities embrace the spirit of Ubuntu through their shared love for the arts. We are proud of what they have achieved in just a few months,” she said.
