Kewtown resident Chevano Frans has been recognised as a Social Justice Rising Star by Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Social Justice.
The award celebrates young leaders who work tirelessly to create equity in their communities, using social media, public speaking, community initiatives, and collaboration with local organisations to drive meaningful change.
The Social Justice Rising Star Award is decided through a public nomination process and judged by a panel led by Professor Thuli Madonsela, director of Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Social Justice. Her respected leadership ensures that recipients like Chevano are recognised for genuine community impact, advocacy, and social justice work.
Lesego Louw, a Youth Rights Associate at the United Nations, was recognised alongside Chevano for her work advancing youth and women’s rights in South African communities.
Mr Frans is the director and co-founder of Chev’s Kitchen Community Organisation, a food security initiative that has been serving Kewtown for five years.
Through the organisation, Mr Frans and his team provide a daily meal to residents while raising awareness around the right to food and access to sustainable nutrition.
“This award is the culmination of five years of hard work through advocacy, education, and food support,” he said. “I don’t seek recognition, but it somehow finds me. This is an affirmation of the work we’ve done for our community.”
Chev’s Kitchen also hosts a yearly Christmas party for children in Athlone, bringing festive joy and support to hundreds of young people. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, December 13, welcoming 500 children.
