Mowbray Maternity Hospital unveiled its new ceiling-suspended X-ray machine on Monday, November 17.

According to provincial health and wellness spokesperson, Jihaan Opperman, this new technology replaces the standard floor-mounted X-ray system in the hospital’s radiography department. “ This modern technology significantly enhances patient care, accessibility, and imaging quality for mothers and newborns,” says Ms Opperman.

Ms Opperman said this machine is designed to enhance flexibility and accessibility for patients like post-caesarean section mums, who require X-rays soon after their surgery. "The improved mobility of the ceiling-suspended tube allows radiographers to X-ray the patient in their beds in the X-ray room, providing a safer and more controlled imaging environment which was not possible with a floor-mounted machine,” she said.

Head of radiography at Mowbray Maternity, Donell van Heerden, said the upgrade marks a meaningful step forward for both patients and staff. “This new X-ray system has transformed the way we work. It gives us the mobility and accuracy we need to image patients safely and comfortably, especially those who are immobile or too fragile to transfer,” she said.

Ms van Heerden said this machine greatly reduces physical strain on staff and improves our overall workflow.

The key benefits of this new x-ray machine include:

  •  Greater mobility and range of motion, enabling easier and more precise positioning
  • Improved workflow, with faster and safer equipment movement around patients
  • Enhanced ergonomics, reducing physical strain on radiographers
  • Better access for bedridden or immobile patients, supporting more dignified, patient-focused care

Ms Opperman said this new x-ray system is now fully operational, with the first patient successfully imaged on Wednesday, November 12.
