Heideveld Library marked Diabetes Awareness Month by hosting a community health awareness event at the Cathkin Community Centre, in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa.

Held on Monday, November 17, the initiative aimed to raise awareness about diabetes and cardiovascular health while encouraging healthier lifestyles among residents, said librarian Nuhaa Portland.

The event also showcased the library’s various services. Staff helped residents sign up for new memberships, promoted the 1000 Stories Before School Starts campaign, and shared information about free e-resources, including Wi-Fi, SmartCape computers, PressReader, and Libby.

Community members enjoyed free health services such as blood pressure checks, glucose testing, and BMI measurements. Informative sessions and interactive talks led by the Heart and Stroke Foundation encouraged engagement and discussions on wellness and disease prevention, she said.

Ms Portland said: “We are thrilled with the turnout. It was wonderful to see the community engage so enthusiastically with both their health and the library’s resources. Events like these remind us of the important role that libraries play beyond lending books.”

The turnout exceeded expectations, with so many residents attending that some had to be turned away. Many expressed gratitude for the convenient, quick, and accessible screenings, she said.
