A 45-year-old man was killed and another, injured in a drive-by shooting in Manenberg on Thursday, December 4.
Police arrested one suspect after a high-speed chase, while three others fled.
Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened and are under investigation by the Manenberg police.
At 6am, occupants of a black Hyundai Atos approached two men standing at the corner of Duinefontein Road and Turfhall Road and opened fire, said Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett.
Several shots were fired, killing the 45-year-old and injuring the 21-year-old in his lower body.
Law enforcement officers who witnessed the shooting fired at the vehicle as it sped away. The car was later stopped in Amazon Way after a short high-speed chase. One of the men, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the back, tried to escape by climbing over a resident’s fence but was arrested by police, said Captain Bennett.
The vehicle had been reported hijacked in the Woodstock policing precinct, he said.
Radley Petersen, chairperson of Manenberg Community Monitors Neighbourhood Watch, said the shootings are becoming almost daily.
“We had another shooting not far from this one. I could see the scene from my house, and when I ran out, the men were already lying there," he said.
“The car drove by and sprayed them with bullets. He was alive when I arrived, but passed away just before the ambulance got there. The other victim was taken to hospital," he said, adding "this must stop".
Most of the time, he said, innocent people are shot - children, bystanders, former gangsters.
"Shooters are holding our neighbourhood hostage. We as neighbourhood watches try our utmost, but this violence cannot continue,” he said, adding that it was "trauma upon trauma," and not normal.
Dr Rashied Omar, Imam of the Claremont Main Road Masjid and member of the steering committee of the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition (C4), said he strongly condemns the shootings in Manenberg, Athlone, and Kewtown.
“These killings are devastating our communities and increase the risk of further retaliation and trauma. This ongoing violence is no longer just a policing issue -it has become a humanitarian crisis," he said.
The latest incidents underline the coalition’s call on Premier Alan Winde to declare a Provincial State of Disaster, so that an urgent, coordinated response can finally be activated.
"Enough is enough," he said.
A Peace Rally will be held in Gugulethu on Sunday, December 7, from 2pm to 4pm at the Indoor Sports Centre, 373 Steve Biko Drive.
The Cape Crime Crisis Coalition (4C’s) will address the recent killings and call on the community to unite against ongoing violence. Residents are encouraged to attend and participate in promoting safety and peace in the area, he said.
