Farewell to Wash ‘n Wear Laundrette: A community hub closes its doors

OWN Correspondent|Published

After 25 years of service, Wash ‘n Wear Laundrette, a beloved family-run business in Athlone, closed its doors for good on Friday, November 28 -  a date the owners describe as a “black Friday” for the family and the community.

The laundrette completed its final wash cycle on that day, bringing an end to a journey that began when it washed its very first load on May 20, 2000.

For a quarter of a century, the business faithfully served customers from Athlone and surrounding areas, becoming more than just a place to clean clothes - it became a community hub.

“Some of our customers moved out of the area but still drove from the northern suburbs just to do their laundry here,” recalls manager Riedwaan Salie.

“Our small business has survived many challenges over the years,” said Mr Salie.

“The Covid-19 pandemic hit us hard, as did ongoing water shortages. We pushed through it all, but after 25 years, we are putting away the detergents and closing our doors for good. Rising municipal tariffs have made it impossible for us to continue, similar to many other small businesses.”

Mr Salie also reflected on his long history in the industry.

“I previously owned Nice ‘n Clean Laundrette in Woodstock, one of the first launderettes in that area. That business traded successfully for 30 years.”

Beyond the machines and detergent, Wash ‘n Wear built lasting relationships.

“Our loyal customers became part of our family,” said Mr Salie. “Families have been bringing their laundry here since their children were in nursery school. Those children used to sleep on the benches while their parents waited. Today, they are adults with children of their own. We have so many fond memories.”

Long-time resident, Fatima Dollie, famous for her koeksisters, shared her own memories.

“I’ve lived in Athlone for decades and was already living opposite the shop when the laundrette opened. Mrs Salie became a good friend. When she visited her son on weekends, she was always ready with advice on how to remove grease from overalls, share natural remedies, and even her blatjang recipe,” she said.

Customers expressed heartfelt gratitude as the doors closed.

“Wash ‘n Wear Laundrette, thank you for ten excellent years of clean laundry, clean machines, folding lessons, and strict rules always given with care and respect,” said Jaqueline van Rooyen.

“Most of all, thank you for treating me like family.”

Education management professional Mr Cranfield added: “I am incredibly sad to hear about the permanent closure. Thank you to the wonderful staff who always delivered excellent service with a smile. May God bless them in all their future endeavours.”

“We would like to thank all our loyal customers who supported us over the years,” said Mr Salie senior.

“Without them, we would not have lasted this long. Even today, some of our long-standing customers send Eid greetings from as far as Dubai. It has been a privilege to serve the Athlone community, and we wish all our customers well.”

Indeed, with the closure of Wash ‘n Wear Laundrette, a cherished chapter comes to an end, marking the close of an era in the Athlone community.
