Manenberg police are investigating a murder after the body of a 22-year-old man was found at a canal on Duinefontein Road in Manenberg.

Provincial spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the man had been shot and a case of murder had been opened.

Captain van Wyk said police responded to reports of a shooting and, on arrival, found the man lying on his back with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

"He was declared dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, and the motive for the attack is yet to be determined, he said.

Manenberg Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Vernon Visagie said most of the killings are "senseless and gang-related, with much of the violence driven by disputes over territory and power."

"We want to see the community work closely with SAPS and neighbourhood watches by sharing information that can help bring those responsible to justice," he said.

In another case, on the same day, at 3.45pm, police responded to a shooting on 8th Avenue in Valhalla Park, where a 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the back and died at the scene.

While police were there, they were told that a woman, 56, had been hit in her arm by a stray bullet. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Bishop Lavis police opened a murder and attempted murder case to investigate, said Captain van Wyk.

Later the same day, while still at the scene, police were called to Hilda Crescent, where they found a man, 20, lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead on arrival, and a murder case was opened.

Both shootings in Valhalla Park are believed to be gang-related, and no suspects have been arrested yet.
