South Africa’s highest-achieving international skateboarding medallist, Jean-Marc Johannes, is preparing for the FISE Battle of Champions in China, an invitation-only event that will bring together the world’s top street skateboarders in March.

“It’s going to be one of the most competitive years of my career,” Jean-Marc said. “I’m focused on training, perfecting my tricks, and staying ready for whatever the competition throws at me.”

From humble beginnings on the streets of Lansdowne, Athlone, with almost no skateboarding infrastructure, Jean-Marc forged a historic international career.

“Growing up, there weren’t many places to skate, but I stayed focused on where I wanted to be. The community around me gave me discipline and resilience that I carry to this day,” he said.

By the end of 2024, Jean-Marc’s dedication earned him a Guinness World Records induction for the most consecutive ollies attempted, following his tenth international medal at the FISE Freestyle Tour in France.

“Being recognized in the Guinness World Records was a surreal moment,” he said.

“It’s proof that hard work, focus, and believing in yourself really do pay off.”

Jean-Marc has also made it his mission to open doors for young South African skaters.

“After making the international podium for South Africa in 2023, I knew I wanted to give back. Working with Kardo International, we’ve created pathways for South Africans to compete at global finals in Stavropol, Russia. It’s about showing the next generation what’s possible,” he said.

Despite his accolades, Jean-Marc remains grounded.

“Skateboarding isn’t just about medals or records,” he said.

“It’s about the journey, the discipline, and the community that supports you. My goal is to keep pushing myself while inspiring others to chase their dreams.”
