Two men were murdered, and a woman was injured in shootings in Athlone this week.
Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said Athlone police have opened a murder case following a shooting on Belgravia Road on Wednesday, February 4.
Police received an alert about the incident at 10.10pm. When they arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot multiple times and was declared dead on the spot, she said.
A woman was also shot in the leg and rushed to a nearby hospital. The ages of both victims have not yet been confirmed. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made, according to police.
The deceased man was a witness in a murder matter, said Athlone police Warrant Officer Zita Norman.
In a separate case, Warrant Officer Norman said police attended a complaint on St Athens Road at 6.10am on the same day. A woman pointed out the victim, a man, who had been shot several times.
The man was taken to the hospital but later died. Six cartridges were found at the scene. The shooting is believed to be gang-related, and a murder case has been opened at Athlone police station.
