Hazendal author Samantha Adams has been named one of the Top 100 Influential Women in South Africa.
The annual event, celebrating the achievements of women, was held at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday September 21.
Ms Adams said she felt “incredibly proud and deeply honoured“ to have received the award, adding that it felt empowering to know that she had been able to inspire other women, particularly those from the Cape Flats, to believe they could rise above their circumstances.
“This award is a reminder that no matter where you come from, success is possible, and I’m so grateful for the recognition. By showcasing their success, the event inspires others to believe in their own potential and reinforces the message that success is attainable, regardless of one’s background. It also fosters a sense of solidarity among women, motivating them to support and uplift one another.”
Ms Adams’s two books, Warrior Outside Chaos Within (2022) and Justice for a Warrior (2024) tell of the sexual, physical, and emotional abuse she endured during childhood and how she overcame it.
She is working on a third book, aimed at children aged 6 to 9, which she plans to release later this year.
Ms Adams said she had started writing in 2021, finding healing in the experience of expressing emotions she had long suppressed.
“Through my stories and poetry, I’ve found strength, and it’s been a way to not only heal myself but to inspire others. I still have tons of poetry that I plan to release, and I can’t wait to continue sharing my journey through writing,” she said.
She advises others facing hardship to never lose hope and to surround themselves with those who can offer guidance and support.
“It’s important to focus on your strengths and passions, whether it’s through education, entrepreneurship, or creativity because these can be powerful tools for change. Healing and progress take time, but with perseverance, self-belief, and support, you can overcome challenges. Remember, you are stronger than your circumstances, and there’s always a path to a better future.
“I’ve faced many challenges in life, from trauma to health setbacks, but I’ve learned that every struggle is an opportunity to grow and become stronger. My journey is proof that you can turn pain into purpose, and that there’s always hope, no matter how dark things may seem. If my story can help even one person believe in themselves, then everything I’ve gone through has been worth it.”
