Bikers from across South Africa will ride for charity to mark Mandela Day this month.
Bikers for Mandela Day, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, will this year rally in aid of “Keep a Girl Child in School” to collect sanitary pads for the three million girls who miss school annually because they cannot afford basic sanitary products.
The initiative was started in 2010 by Nelson Mandela’s former personal assistant, Zelda la Grange. Bikers across the country can participate by arranging a ride in their own cities, or by joining the mass rallies planned in Cape Town and Johannesburg on Saturday July 14 and Sunday July 15, respectively.
“My hope is that all riders of scooter bikes, superbikes and everything with two wheels and an engine will join us to make a massive impact to this cause. As little as R180 can provide enough sanitary pads to keep one girl in school for an entire year. A little can do so much,” said Ms La Grange.
Bikers can meet at The Grand Parade on Saturday July 14 at 8am. The ride will then depart at 9.30am and travel to Drakenstein Prison. Prospective riders can register for free at https://www.nelsonmandela.org/nelson-mandela-100.
Participants are asked to take along one pack of sanitary pads – or as many as they can afford or carry – for the ride. All products donated will be distributed to girls in need by project partner Mimi Women.
A crowdfunding page has been created in support of Mimi Women. Visit www.givengain.com/e/bikersformandeladay2018/ to donate.
