The Callas Foundation is launching a 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, on Friday, with a call for men and boys to become allies in the fight against sexual violence.
The event will focus on the Callas Foundation’s Building Bonding Beyond (BBB) programme to help boys aged from 10 to 15 to resist negative influences and foster a culture of respect.
“Engaging men and boys as allies in the fight against gender-based violence is not only essential but transformative,” said Caroline Peters, executive director of the Callas Foundation.
“Our BBB programme is a clear example of how we can nurture positive change from a young age and build a future free from violence.”
Identity, consent and respect were among topics dealt with by the programme, she said, adding that it was part of the foundation’s long-term strategy to combat sexual violence by dealing with its root causes early on.
The Callas Foundation also offers a range of services to victims of abuse and their families, including legal advocacy, court support, psychosocial services, women’s empowerment initiatives and community education programmes.
“These services ensure that survivors receive holistic support while addressing the systemic issues that perpetuate violence,” Ms Peters said.
The campaign will start with a picket from the intersection of Klipfontein and Protea Road to Jan Smuts Road, in Athlone, from 3.30pm to 6pm.
The campaign is supported by the South African Football Association, LangaForMen, the YMCA, SAPS, the National Prosecuting Authority, the judiciary, Heideveld Female Football Academy, and other organisations.
All are invited to attend.
