A Lansdowne woman plans to hold a fashion show at the Samaj Centre next month to raise money for the elderly.
Proceeds of the fund-raiser will go to various old-age homes, including a home for the mentally challenged in Grassy Park Centre. They include the Douglas Murray old-age home in Retreat, an old-age home in Lotus River and Heavens Nest in Ottery.
Selina Dalla said it was important for people to support the show as the funds would see to much needed items for the homes such as food, toiletries, clothing, pots and crockery, crayons and colouring books, a freezer, games or entertainment, and 10 thick plastic-covered mattresses.
She said the homes also needed volunteer occupational therapists, as well as a pest control sponsor. Some of the homes also have a problem with an influx of birds.
The fashion show will showcase Western clothing and a Saree Queen pageant will showcase Eastern clothing.
All ages are welcome to enter and must do so before Thursday November 30.
The show will take place on Saturday December 9 at 6.30pm for 7pm, and tickets are R100.
“I wanted to make sure that it takes place after the end-of-year exams so as to not interrupt the matric exams. People must enter early so that the training can start early,” said Ms Dalla.
Every year the organisation also treats the seniors to a lunch and a day of entertainment.
“Sometimes we take them to Hout Bay, and they have fish and chips. We are hoping to raise enough money to cover all the expenses and make a profit to buy the goods they need,” she said.
Ms Dalla said donations in the form of winter blankets would be appreciated as well as prizes and flowers for the models.
“It will be a very entertaining evening, and people will enjoy it. There will also be sweet meats on arrival,” she said. For more information, contact Selina Dalla at 083 384 8449.
