Seven Ned Doman High School Grade 11s are raising funds to make sure each pupil has a matric jacket next year.
Kauthar Button, 20, the sister of Grade 11 pupil Daiyaan Button, helped them organise a fund-raiser at an Ottery nightclub, on Saturday October 29.
She praised the pupils for their efforts as well as the school’s bursar, Gayle Badeker, and various sponsors for their support.
The fund-raiser was necessary because times were tough and many parents couldn’t afford the jackets, said Ms Button.
“I decided to get involved in it because some kids have worked really hard, and the school doesn’t give matric jackets. They all deserve one so that they can represent the school and make a difference. We already have some people who have offered to make the jackets,” she said.
Grade 11 Milisa Oliphant said their teachers had been very supportive. “The reaction from other pupils has been very positive,” she said. “They are very excited because many can’t afford to buy their own jackets. Their parents are just as excited about this.”
Fellow Grade 11 Emahle Shasha added: “It is important to have a matric jacket so we can put our school’s name up high and be an example to other schools, so that we can feel good in our jackets, representing our school.”
