Beatrice van Schalkwyk celebrated her 99th birthday on Wednesday March 9 with her family and friends.
Ms Van Schalkwyk, who was born in 1923 in Rondebosch, is the last of six siblings. She has lived in her home in First Avenue, Rondebosch East, since 1954.
Her husband, Nicholas, died in 1995. They have one son, Terence, who is married to Loretta. Ms Van Schalkwyk also has two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
She attributes her longevity to abstinence from cigarettes and alcohol.
Ward councillor Mark Kleinschmidt was among those who wished Ms Van Schalkwyk well.
