Heideveld children had a blast at “the movies” last Friday night as they snacked on popcorn, sweets, and cold drinks.
The Heideveld Baptist Church was host to around 50 children and adults at its first fund-raiser for the year.
The R10-a-child and R30-an-adult entry fees will go towards replacing the church’s ceiling, which has been damaged by the weather and a spate of break-ins last year, according to Pastor Vernon Bosch.
He said he also hoped to re-establish a computer lab that had been targeted by burglars.
“We decided on a movie night because it was the cheapest option. We would really like to have more events like these, but our main concern is transport for the children. We only have my car, and they all need to be taken home at 10pm. It really is important to have things like this in the community to get the kids off the streets. The gangs are looking to recruit these little kids so if we can keep them off the streets, the gangs’ chances are lessened.”
The church had suffered about six break-ins last year, he said.
“My passion is children and helping the community. We are hoping to start an internet cafe. We want to teach them how to make their own CVs and also host learners’ classes, but we need more hands to come on board to help.”
Church member Velda George, 75, said that the community needed to support the church because they all benefited from it.
“It would be appreciated if the community can help the church go forward. We need the church to be uplifted inside and out. The flooring and benches need to be replaced, and we need lots of new equipment.”
Ronelle Bosch 30, who teaches at the Bubble Bekkies Daycare run by the church, said they charged a nominal fee of R50 a month because many of their children came from poor homes with parents who were addicted to drugs.
“We give them love and support and really try our best to teach them the basics before they go to school. This is what I love to do, I love kids. The children learn so well and when we see them later in life prospering at school, we are so proud. Any donations for the creche would be appreciated.”
