Just over a month after launching its new library, Modderdam High School hosted Professor Jonathan Jansen, to launch his book, Corrupted: A study of chronic dysfunction in South African universities.
The event, on Tuesday April 4, allowed for interaction between Professor Jansen, the pupils, teachers and residents who attended.
Grade 10 pupil Azra Pekeur, Modderdam’s school library committee chairperson, said the launch was just one of their three “critical”objectives.
“Firstly, our purpose is to keep our library functioning optimally and effectively. Secondly, we want to recruit every student to join the library. Thirdly, we want to bring authors, academics, influencers, journalists, poets, and community leaders to our school, and the launch of Professor Jansen’s book was exactly that. As learners, we want to be inspired and motivated,” Azra said.
Professor Jansen, a distinguished professor of education at Stellenbosch University, later described the event on social media as a “miracle”, and he wrote, “In the heart of Bonteheuwel with all the social ills and desperation of a Cape Flats township, the school and community launched one of my books (Corrupted) to a full-house of teachers, students and local residents over two hours of engagement.”
He also praised the school for establishing the library.
“Decorated from scratch, Modderdam High has one of the most beautiful library spaces I have seen anywhere in the country, and to hear the students ask pertinent and powerful questions about education, values and the book gave me fresh hope for the future. Thank you (teacher) Adnaan (Adams), the principal (Rhona Rayray Wanza) and the student library committee for lifting the human spirit.”
