For the third year in a row, the efforts of the Bonteheuwel community and businesses ensured another successful seniors’ lunch being hosted.
The event, which was held on Thursday May 10 at the Bonteheuwel multi-purpose centre, was the brainchild of resident Sandra Jantjies, who only had her faith as a resource.
A total of 180 seniors were treated to a three-course meal and each also received a goody bag.
An excited Ms Jantjies, said: “It only grows bigger and better every year. What you are seeing today is all just faith. I got the hall free-of-charge, and booked it. Then I put an appeal on Facebook for help. This year we were just so blessed. I stood in awe and asked God if this is really happening. We got four bakers who came on board, other local businesses and the community really went out of their way to make this possible. I am so grateful to the Bonteheuwel community, because without their help, we would not be able to make this happen.”
Ms Jantjies said she started promoting her idea just before Easter, and the response was overwhelming. She also put in two weeks of planning for it. Everything – from the food, the goody bags, and even the sound was offered free-of-charge.
“There are so much negativity out there, but we wanted to show that we care and that we are a community that gives and shares,” Ms Jantjies said.
The oldest at the event, Ellen Johnson, 95, said she appreciated the way they were made to feel special.
“This day is very blessed. It can only be because of God’s blessings. I really enjoyed myself and I want to thank everybody involved for making it so special for us,” Ms Johnson said.
