Buy food or school stationery? That’s the stark choice many parents face, but it will be one the moms and dads of children at a Hanover Park primary school will now find easier to make thanks to a charity.
The South African National Zakah Fund (Sanzaf) gave stationery and food to 1000 Morgenson Primary School pupils last week.
Many of the children are from the impoverished settlements of Pooke se Bos and Flamingo.
Sanzaf’s Nazeer Vadia, said the pens, pencils and books in the stationery packs gave the children’s families breathing room to spend what little money they had on other essentials.
“It is also ensuring we equip the students with the necessary tools to fulfill their potential at school,” he said.
There had been a “great” public response to Sanzaf’s call to sponsor the stationery packs at R50 a pupil, and it helped to make a “tangible difference in the lives of the needy”, he said.
The school is also part of Sanzaf’s monthly food programmes feeding thousands around the province.
And it also benefits from the Western Cape Education Department’s Peninsula Feeding Scheme.
School principal Envor Petersen thanked Sanzaf for the donations and other support it had given, including uniforms for pupils.
“We realise that getting sponsorships is not easy, and we thank them. Last year they gave each child a winter pack which cost R300 a child, and they are always giving more,” said Mr Petersen.
