The generosity of the Bonteheuwel community has brought tears of joy to a resident who co-ordinated a project to spread Christmas joy among the children.
Sandra Jantjies started the Santa Shoebox project six years ago, with only 50 boxes.
On Thursday December 13, she hosted 300 children at the area’s multi-purpose centre, where they were fed, entertained, and received Santa Shoeboxes, each filled with necessities, a toy and sweet treats.
This, however, Ms Jantjies said, would not have been possible if the residents and local businesses did not open their hearts.
“Up until this morning, before the event, the blessings just came pouring in. Over the years, this initiative just grew bigger, and it is only because of people’s generosity. Despite some of the negative news about the area, this shows me that Bonteheuwel is a caring and sharing community. This is the beauty of my community and I am proud to say I am from Bonteheuwel,” Ms Jantjies said.
Ms Jantjies was assisted by Belinda Barros, who helped her with the planning and “all the running around”.
The children were entertained by Wesley Bosch, and were impressed by the dance moves of the Phoenix Crew from Bonteheuwel High School.
The Phoenix Crew have all earned their South African colours in hip hop and will represent the country at an international competition in Arizona, America, in August next year.
Ms Jantjies said the children who were invited to the party, were chosen by community leaders. Each leader was asked to identify 20 children from their pocket of the community.
“God is awesome. I am filled with so much gratitude, and I would like to thank everybody who contributed to make this day a success,” she said.
