Vangate Mall closed its doors on Monday as a precaution, following riots and looting at malls in other parts of the country.
Violence has gripped Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and malls have been targeted.
In a statement, Vangate Mall centre management said: “Due to riots breaking out across the country, as a precautionary measure, all tenants have been urged to discontinue trade with immediate effect.
“Additional security and riot control are on standby should we be affected by the unrest.
“In the event that we experience any threat to the building, the entrance doors (where applicable), will be closed to the public. For now, the measures will apply to today, Monday July 12 only, and the situation will be monitored on a day-to-day basis.
“The safety of our customers and tenants is of the utmost importance to us, and further closures will be communicated via our social media pages. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Athlone SAPS spokeswoman Sergeant Zita Norman confirmed that the station’s crime intelligence unit was at Vangate Mall to evaluate the situation.
