Christal Riegers, Delft
On Tuesday November 19, while on my way to work, my husband and I found ourselves with a bit of car trouble.
While driving, our car just cut out in Duinefontuin Road before the Heideveld traffic lights. There are two churches on either side of that intersection.
My husband got out to check if he could figure out what the problem was. While standing there, the first thought that crossed my mind was, “Is this even a safe area for us to be stuck right now?”
Within five minutes, a guy on a bicycle approached us and asked if we were okay or needed assistance in any way. I then saw “Community in Blue” printed on his jacket.
I did not get his name though, but I’m so grateful towards him for coming to offer assistance.
My husband discovered that our petrol gauge is faulty and we needed petrol. We contacted my brother-in-law, who lives nearby. He came but could not help as he had to get his daughter to school on time as she was writing exams, starting at 8am.
The gentleman from Community in Blue stayed with us all the time so when my brother-in-law left, he got on his radio to ask one of his colleagues to assist with an empty five-litre container for petrol.
His colleague with a green neighbourhood watch bib joined with a bicycle and waited with him. He also directed my husband to the nearest petrol station in the area. As my husband left, he assured him that he’ll stay with me until he comes back, and that meant a lot to me as a woman. I felt so relieved that someone was waiting with me as we are living in a cruel society.
When my husband returned, the gentleman in Community in Blue attire left, but there were two neighbourhood watch members on bicycles with us for further assistance.
My husband was trying to fill the petrol tank, and then one of the neighbourhood watch guys called in assistance. Another gentleman with a silver car pulled up with the necessary stuff that we would need to fill the car with the petrol. My heart was so full, truly. I could not believe this because in these days everyone just turns a blind eye most of the time. The three men stayed with us and even assisted with pushing the car to start. We thanked them for assisting us, but I just wanted whoever is in charge to know how grateful and thankful we are. If only all our areas can have these safety measures in place.
I managed to get the name of one of them – John Goliath. To Mr Goliath and the rest of the team that assisted us, we applaud and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Keep up the fantastic work you are doing in your area. I hope your community appreciates what you are doing in keeping them safe.
Well done to the Community in Blue and the neighbourhood watch.
I pray God’s hand of protection be over all of you as you serve your community.
