Former soccer administrator, Diliza Archie Diyasi, from Gugulethu, celebrated his 85th birthday at the weekend.
Affectionally known as "Mr Soccer" during his hey day, Diyasi played a key role in introducing schools soccer in various townships and served as an executive member of the now-defunct South African National Football Association and National Professional Soccer League, the forerunners to the current soccer structures.
With his ear close to the ground, Diyasi was also a former sports freelancer for the Cape Argus and other newspapers.
"God has blessed you with long life, a sharp mind and good health," said Mphathi Nyewe, who was mentored by Diyasi and regarded him as a father figure while growing up in Cape Town.
"Ukhule daddy, ungabisa khokhoba, zange uqalise. Happy happy birthday," said Nyewe, who now lives in Johannesburg.
