Patrick Wyngard has long been a pillar of community sport in Cape Town, where he has distinguished himself as a player, coach, and administrator across various sporting codes, including cricket, rugby, and darts. While he shone on the rugby field for Perseverance at City Park and on cricket pitches across the Peninsula for his much-loved Victoria Cricket Club, his most enduring legacy is rooted in decades of steadfast leadership and service to sport.

The 73-year-old Vanguard Estate resident has dedicated more than fifty years to sports administration. A former City of Cape Town employee for 45 years, Wyngard has been central to the growth and stability of several sporting institutions. He is a former chairman and now Life president of Victoria Cricket Club in Kenwyn, a stalwart of Perseverance Rugby Club, and a long-serving chairman of the Victoria Darts Club.

His profound and sustained contribution to community sport has earned him widespread recognition. Recently, the Cape Town Sports Council presented him with a Lifetime Achiever’s Award, while the Western Province Rugby Football Union honoured him last week with a Presidential Award. In the same week, he also received a Lifetime Achiever’s Award from the South Peninsula Darts Association (SPRA).

Wyngard continues to play a prominent role in sports administration and presently serves on the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Board and is the convenor of both the WPCA Local Leagues Committee and the Western Province Rugby Disciplinary Committee.

Through these positions, he has worked tirelessly to uphold integrity, discipline and opportunity at grassroots level.

“I’m deeply indebted to those who felt it was good to honour me. But it’s all for the love of sport,” he said. On retiring anytime soon, he said. “I thought of it, but. It keeps me busy. So there is no point in stopping now,” he said with a smile.

Wyngard remains an inspirational figure to generations of young sportspeople,  a symbol of dedication and unwavering service to his community sport.
