A dramatic clash unfolded between Devonshire and Blackheath in the Cape Town Softball Association’s Ladies First Division, at Turfhall sport complex, on Saturday, January 11.
Blackheath mounted a fierce comeback against Devonshire. Trailing 10-2, Blackheath’s players pushed through the tension, closing the gap to 10-9, their faces etched with desperation and determination.
With every pitch by Talia Cornelius and her teammates at Blackheath, the stakes grew higher.
Yet, despite the mounting pressure, Farah Floris and their team at Devonshire held their composure, their relief palpable as they secured the win by a single point.
Marking the return of softball after the festive holidays, the raw emotion on both sides spoke volumes— Blackheath’s frustration and resolve and Devonshire’s quiet triumph.
At the end of the match, Devonshire’s Gadija Hoosain shared that the game was particularly special, as it was played in memory of their teammate, Melissa Prince, who tragically lost her life to cancer.
Prince was married to former Proteas star, Ashwell Prince.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Prince and Kistensamy families on the devastating loss of Melissa Prince, who left us on December 29. Melissa was more than just a teammate; she was a cherished friend who touched the lives of everyone she met. Her kindness, spirit, and love will forever remain in our hearts. May you find comfort in the memories of her beautiful soul during this difficult time. With love and deepest sympathy,” Devonshire Rovers Softball Club shared.
