Western Province scrumhalf Lauren Adams was instrumental in the women’s team’s emphatic 52-7 victory over Boland at the Hawston sports ground on Saturday.
The 33-year-old Grassy Park resident might not have been on the score sheet but she played a dynamic role in speeding up the game to enable her teammates to run in eight tries in the national Premier League match.
“I would like to believe that the level of intensity is high. It might not be at the same level of the men’s game, but I believe that we play at very high level at a woman’s level. I love the sport for this intensity and competitiveness,” said the former touch rugby specialist.
“I played touch rugby for all my career until about six years ago when I decided to turn my attention to contact 15s. It has been great. I love the intensity it generates,” said Adams.
Adams was part of the national touch rugby team which took part in the 2019 World Cup in Singapore. South Africa ended in seventh place.
The energy she displays on the field becomes more clear when she speaks about her day job as fitness instructor at the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police training Academy.
“I love my job. But look I must emphasise, I’m not a Metro cop,” she laughs.
“But yes, I proudly work for them to put them through their paces. I attended the ETA college where I qualified as a fitness instructor,” added the former Muizenberg High School pupil.
WP, which is coached by former national women’s team coach Stanley Raubenheimer, sits at the top of the national log after two games with 10 points and prepares for their next assignment against the Lions on Saturday May 27 in Cape Town.
